I've seen threads relating to coding the instruments that describe similar behaviors of the instrument cluster and the solution provided is that "daten files" need updated. I and the service writer at the local BMW dealer have no idea what those are. The issue follows the instrument cluster- put it in a different e90 and it behaves the same way.
